CANCELED: Seal and Bird Eco-Cruise

UPDATE 3/3: NJHN GROUP SEA CRUISE IS CANCELED!
It’s not looking good for the sea cruise tomorrow leaving from Highlands. There’s now a COASTAL FLOOD WARNING in addition to a GALE WARNING for early Saturday. We haven’t yet received an email from Seastreak canceling the cruise, but spoke to their ticket office this morning. They were still deciding what to do. If they cancel, tickets can be exchanged or refunded. If they don’t cancel, call the ticket office (800-262-8743) at least an hour before departure time (12:30) to find out what can be done. If you hadn’t bought tickets in advance, you’ve got no worries.

We’re not going to tell anyone else what to do, but in our judgment it’s too dangerous to head to the coast during a coastal flood warning right after a gale warning. So if you decide to go, this is no longer an NJHN event and it’s your decision whether to go or not. Sorry this didn’t work out due to the weather

[UPDATE 3/2: I called the Seastreak office to get some clarification about weather, cancelations and exchanges. Since there’s a GALE warning from Friday night to early Saturday morning for Sandy Hook Bay, where “strong winds will cause hazardous waves which could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility,” I thought it best to check.

If you’ve bought tickets in advance, if Seastreak decides to cancel the cruise, you’ll get an email (the same one you gave when you bought the tickets), “probably” by 3 PM. If you don’t get an email but you feel uncomfortable with the possibility of a “capsize,” you can call and transfer your tickets to another Saturday this month. I don’t know about canceling/refund, I didn’t ask. Call Seastreak at 800-262-8743.

For those who haven’t already bought tickets, I’ll post here as quickly as I can with new information, including whether I’ve decided to change my own tickets to a different date. We’re joining the American Littoral Society aboard a Seastreak ferry for a Seal and Bird Eco-Cruise around Sandy Hook and the NY/NJ Bight. In addition to seeing migratory visitors, we’ll learn more about the incredible ecology of this unique environment.

A wildlife expert from the American Littoral Society will be onboard to provide species identification support and additional information about the animals spotted. After taking a good look for seals around Sandy Hook, the cruise will continue north towards Hoffman and Swinburne Islands where seals like to ‘haul out’ and sun themselves on the rocks. Finally, the boat will head towards the Verrazano Bridge – another reliable seal watching location! **DON’T FORGET YOUR BINOCULARS!**

Tickets are $55 per adult, $50 for seniors 65+, $30 children 12 and under. Buy tickets at Seastreak.

We don’t know how quickly the tickets will sell out for the March 4 cruise, so if you want to join us, please buy your tickets soon. **BE SURE to check the correct date of March 4 before purchasing.
