NJHN April Program with Hector Garcia: Sex, Power & Partisanship

Our speaker this month is Hector A. Garcia, PsyD, who will speak about his 2019 book Sex, Power, and Partisanship: How Evolutionary Science Makes Sense of Our Political Divide.

Politics can elicit powerful, irrational, sometimes volatile emotions. It is precisely these passions that political science falls regrettably short of explaining. Through the lens of evolutionary science, Garcia offers a novel perspective on why we hold our political ideas, and why they are so often in conflict. The author reveals how even the most complex political processes can be traced back to our basic drives to survive and reproduce—including the policies we back, whether we are liberal or conservative, and whether we are inspired or repelled by the words of a president.

Hector is an Assistant Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio—Department of Psychiatry. He is a clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of combat-related post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He has published extensively on the treatment of PTSD in combat veterans, masculine psychology, and the evolutionary roots of war, politics, and religion.
