This month’s speaker is Chrissy Stroop with a talk titled Christian Nationalism, Christian Privilege, and the Importance of Exvangelical Voices.

The media’s current focus on Christian nationalism as a threat to democracy is a welcome development. Nevertheless, the national discussion remains shaped by Christian privilege, which is harmful both to secular Americans and to members of minority religions. In this talk, Stroop will unpack the too-little acknowledged concept of Christian privilege, provide examples of its impact on the press, and point to ways we could reshape the national conversation in the direction of being less biased in favor of Christians. One key intervention Stroop supports is to demand that journalists, commentators, and public intellectuals take those most directly harmed by authoritarian Christianity, including exvangelicals and other former conservative Christians, seriously as stakeholders.

Chrissy Stroop is the coeditor (with Lauren O’Neal) of Empty the Pews: Stories of Leaving the Church, an anthology of personal essays by former conservative Christians. She was raised in the Christian Right and subjected to a Christian nationalist education in evangelical schools. Now a vocal critic of the Christian Right, she is a senior correspondent for Religion Dispatches and a columnist for openDemocracy. Stroop came out as a transgender woman in 2019.

This meeting is free and open to the public, but requires advance Zoom registration.
