June Program: Moral Realism Without God @ Franklin Township Library

Guest speaker: Professor Aaron Rabinowitz, the Philosopher in Residence for the Rutgers University Honors College.  He also teaches Ethics through the Rutgers Philosophy Department.

Aaron’s goal is to make moral realism palatable to non-theists. Moral realism is the view that objective moral truths exist and that they ought to influence our behavior. Theists have largely abandoned the argument that atheists can’t act morally, and have shifted to arguing that atheists can’t support the existence of objective moral truths. Aaron believes that atheists can actually present a better justification for moral realism than theists, and that we benefit greatly from adopting objective ethical language, even though some groups have historically used that objectively ethical language to oppress others.

Aaron also co-hosts two philosophy podcasts: Philosophers in Space and Embrace the Void. Both shows attempt to make philosophy accessible and helpful for everyone, through the lenses of science fiction and existential horror.

The program will start at 1:30 pm in the Community Room. Free and open to the public. Refreshments provided.

After the meeting, everyone is welcome to join us for an early dinner at 4 pm at Ruby Tuesday, 250 Davidson Ave, Somerset.
