NJHN Darwin Day Program (Zoom): The Life of Mary Treat and her Letters with Charles Darwin

Join us for a special Darwin Day talk by Deborah Boerner Ein, author of Mary Treat: A Biography (2022), as she shares the story of Mary Treat, a 19th century ecologist who lived and worked in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Her studies of carnivorous plants coincided with those of Charles Darwin, and she corresponded with the esteemed British naturalist more than any other woman scientist. The two evolutionary biologists exchanged 15 letters over the course of five years from 1871 to 1876. This presentation will highlight that relationship in addition to shedding light on Mary Treat’s life and wider body of scientific work.

Deborah Boerner Ein has a Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry/Natural Resource Management from Rutgers University. She is the current editor of SNJ Today newspaper in Cumberland County, NJ, and has held editorial positions at New Jersey Outdoors, American Forests, and Lapidary Journal. Her researching of Mary Treat began at the Vineland Historical and Antiquarian Society, which holds the Treat estate files. In addition to writing the biography of Mary Treat, Deborah tells Mary’s story in a children’s book, Mary Had a Little Zoo, written to inspire youngsters to observe nature and carry on the adventures of environmental study.
