Mubarak Bala is the president of the Humanist Association of Nigeria. Almost one year ago, on April 28, 2020, he was detained and taken to an unknown location in northern Nigeria for alleged blasphemy against Islam. He has not been charged. In December 2020, a court ordered his release on bail, but that has not happened because the police say he is not in their custody. He is still being detained and has had very little contact with his legal team or his wife.
He had previously been forcibly admitted for 18 days to a psychiatric hospital by his own family in 2014 for his nonbelief.
Every day he remains detained his health is deteriorating and he is in danger of being attacked or killed by religious extremists. Humanists, and everyone who supports religious freedom, must speak out as loudly as possible to advocate for Mubarak’s immediate release. Mubarak’s wife Amina needs her husband freed, and his infant son needs his father. Please read more about what you can do to help.
